Best Carp Sleeping Bags for Winter: 4 and 5 Season Bags Compared

By Hooked Tackle · Last updated 2 November 2026
We are a tackle shop in Newmarket, and these are the sleeping bags we would choose between for a winter night on the bank.

Quick Answer

For winter carp fishing, you want a 4-season bag at least, or a 5-season bag if you fish through hard frosts. The best value winter bag we stock is the Fox Voyager at £129.99. The Gardner Carp Duvet Plus at £159.99 is the best all-year choice, a 4-season bag that becomes 5-season with its inner thermal sheet. The Fortis x Snugpak Techlite at £279.95 is the premium pick, 5-season at just 3kg. A 2–3 season bag needs a thermal bedchair cover before it is any good in winter.

What Do Sleeping Bag Season Ratings Mean?

Quick answer: they are a rough guide from the maker, not a standard. A 2–3 season bag is for late spring to early autumn, a 4-season bag covers most of the winter, and a 5-season bag is for the coldest nights.

Season ratings are a label each brand chooses, so one maker's 4-season bag will not be exactly as warm as another's. There is a proper lab test for sleeping bags, EN ISO 23537, which gives a Comfort rating (the lowest temperature for a relaxed, comfortable night), a Limit rating (the lowest you can sleep through curled up against the cold) and an Extreme rating, which is for survival only. Rab explains the three ratings well.

Carp sleeping bags rarely carry those ratings, and none of the bags below quote one. So treat the season number as a guide, compare bags within one brand where you can, and remember that a bedchair cover, a good mattress underneath and what you wear to bed all make a big difference to how warm you are.

Best Value Winter Bag: Fox Voyager

Quick answer: the Fox Voyager at £129.99 is a 4-season bag with fleece linings and a hot foot pocket, and it is the cheapest proper winter bag we stock.

The Fox Voyager is built for cold nights. It has a micro fleece lined base and a sherpa fleece lined upper layer, hollow-fibre filling, and an oversized fleece baffle behind the zips to stop heat escaping. The zips stop short of the foot end to make a warm pocket around your feet, which is where most people feel the cold first.

It measures 213 x 94cm, weighs 3.9kg, and has 10mm crash zips for getting out quickly when you get a take. Elasticated hoods at both ends hold it on most bedchairs. If you fish a few winter nights a year and want one bag that will handle them, this is the one.

Best All-Year Bag: Gardner Carp Duvet Plus

Quick answer: the Gardner Carp Duvet Plus at £159.99, down from £184.99, is a big 4-season bag that becomes 5-season when you add its inner thermal sheet.

The Carp Duvet Plus is a multi-layered bag with a removable middle layer. On its own, Gardner rate the outer shell as a 4-season bag. Peg the inner thermal sheet onto the top layer and it becomes a 5-season bag. That makes it one bag for the whole year: strip it back in spring and autumn, and build it up for January.

It is big, at 105 x 235cm including the hood, so it suits standard and wide bedchairs and bigger anglers. The outer shell is water-repellent, breathable DPM camo, and there are two Velcro pockets for your phone and keys. The trade-off is bulk: it packs to 58cm long and 5.5kg.

If your bed is a standard width, the Gardner Carp Duvet Compact (£149.99, down from £169.99) is the same idea in a 98 x 230cm size, with a removable thermal middle layer for year-round use. Gardner say it fits standard-sized beds but not wide ones.

Best Premium Bag: Fortis x Snugpak Techlite

Quick answer: the Fortis x Snugpak Techlite at £279.95 is 5-season at 3kg, and 3-season at 2kg with its top layer removed.

The Techlite is a collaboration between Fortis and Snugpak, the UK sleeping bag maker known for military bags, and it is handmade in the UK. It uses Snugpak's Softie Premier insulation and a breathable, windproof Paratex micro fabric. Unlike a mummy-shaped outdoor bag, it is cut to fit a bedchair, with elasticated hoods at both ends and draught baffles along the crash zips.

The removable top layer is what makes it work all year. With it on, the bag is rated 5-season and weighs 3kg. With it off, it is a 3-season bag at 2kg. Fortis describe it as having the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any fishing bag. It is 95 x 210cm and comes in olive or DPM camo, with a compression sack.

It is a lot of money for a sleeping bag. But if you walk to your swims, fish a lot of winter nights, or simply sleep cold, it gives you a 5-season rating for less weight than any other bag we stock.

For Spring to Autumn: Fox EOS 2 and Gardner Camo Crash Bag

Quick answer: both are £79.99 and good bags for the warmer months, but neither is a winter bag on its own.

The Fox EOS 2 is a 2–3 season bag for late spring, summer and early autumn, with fleece lining at the head and foot, crash zips and an internal baffle. It measures 213 x 94cm and weighs 2.9kg.

The Gardner Camo Crash Bag is an ultra-light 3-season bag at 2kg. Gardner suggest using it on its own in summer, and with a bedchair cover through spring and autumn.

Either one, with a thermal bedchair cover over the top, will stretch into milder winter nights. For proper frosts, step up to one of the bags above.

Do You Need a Bedchair Cover?

Quick answer: in winter, yes. A thermal cover adds a lot of warmth, keeps dew and frost off your bag, and turns a 3-season bag into something usable on colder nights.

A bedchair cover goes over the top of your sleeping bag and clips to the bedchair. It blocks draughts, adds an insulated layer, and stops the outside of your bag getting damp with dew, frost or rain blowing in under the shelter.

How Do You Stay Warm in a Sleeping Bag?

Quick answer: insulate underneath you, go to bed dry, wear a hat, and use a hot water bottle. Never use a gas heater in a closed bivvy.

  • Insulate underneath. You lose a lot of heat into whatever you lie on. A good bedchair mattress, and a bag or sleep system with a padded base, matters as much as the top layer. Our bedchair guide covers the options.
  • Go to bed dry. Change into dry base layers and socks before you get in. Damp clothes make for a cold night however good the bag is. Our winter clothing guide covers layering, and our Fortis Tundra review compares the warmest winter suits.
  • Wear a hat. A hat or hood keeps your head warm when it is the only part of you outside the bag.
  • Use a hot water bottle. Fill a Fox Camolite Hot Water Bottle (£19.99) from your flask and put it in the foot of the bag before you get in.
  • Heated blankets. A heated blanket runs from a power pack and warms the bed from underneath. The Nash Indulgence Heated Blanket is £129.99 in the wide size, made to fit Nash Indulgence sleep systems, and it needs a power pack with a cigarette lighter output.
  • No gas heaters. Gas heaters and stoves give off carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. The NHS warns against using a camping stove inside a tent, and a closed bivvy is no different.

Will It Fit Your Bedchair?

Quick answer: check the width against your bed, and the weight and pack size against how far you walk.

A bag that is too narrow for a wide bedchair slides about and lets draughts in. A bag that is too big for a narrow bed bunches up. The Gardner Carp Duvet Compact fits standard beds but not wide ones, while the Carp Duvet Plus at 105cm wide suits standard and wide beds.

Weight matters if you walk to your swims. The Techlite is 3kg as a 5-season bag and the Fox Voyager 3.9kg, while the Carp Duvet Plus packs to 5.5kg. Many anglers leave the bag folded inside the bedchair to save space, and most of these bags have elasticated hoods or straps to hold them on.

Why are carp bags square, not mummy-shaped? A mummy bag is warmer for its weight because there is less air inside to heat, but it is hard to get out of quickly. Carp bags are cut to the shape of a bedchair, with crash zips down both sides, so you can be out and on the rod within seconds of a take.

Why synthetic fill, not down? Down is lighter and packs smaller, but it loses much of its warmth when it gets damp, and a bivvy in winter is full of condensation. Synthetic fills, such as the hollow-fibre in the Fox Voyager and the Snugpak insulation in the Techlite, cope with damp much better, which is why carp bags almost always use them.

Sleeping Bag or Sleep System?

Quick answer: a sleep system is a bedchair with its own matched bag or duvet. It is quicker to set up and pack away, but a separate bag lets you keep your bedchair and change the bag for the season.

With a sleep system, the bag fixes to the bed and both pack down together, so there is nothing to wrestle back into place in the dark. The Nash Indulgence HD40 Sleep System (£339.99, 6 legs) pairs a 40mm foam mattress with a 4-season hollow-fibre duvet, at 16.5kg. The Solar Worldwide Sleep System is £379.99 for the 6-leg standard (14.8kg) or £429.99 for the 8-leg wide (17kg), with a layered bag that Solar rate as 5-season.

The trade-off is weight and flexibility. A sleep system is one heavy load to carry, at 14.8kg to 17kg for these two, and you cannot swap the bag without swapping the lot. If you already own a good bedchair, a separate bag and a thermal cover is usually the cheaper way to get warm. Our bedchair buying guide covers the beds themselves.

What Most Anglers Get Wrong

Quick answer: using a summer bag in winter and forgetting about the cold coming up from underneath.

  1. A summer bag in December. A 2–3 season bag on its own is not enough for a frost. Add a thermal cover or step up a bag.
  2. Nothing underneath. A thin, old bedchair mattress lets the cold straight through, however good the bag is.
  3. Getting in damp. Wet socks and a sweaty base layer will keep you cold all night.
  4. Comparing season ratings across brands. They are not a standard, so judge a bag on its features, layers and weight as well as its season number.
  5. Heating the bivvy with gas. Use a hot water bottle or a heated blanket, never a gas heater in a closed bivvy.

FAQs

What season sleeping bag do I need for winter carp fishing?
At least a 4-season bag, and a 5-season bag if you fish through hard frosts or sleep cold. A 2–3 season bag is fine from late spring to early autumn, and can stretch into milder winter nights with a thermal bedchair cover over it.

What is the difference between a 4-season and a 5-season sleeping bag?
A 5-season bag is the warmer of the two, made for the coldest winter nights, while a 4-season bag covers most of the winter. The ratings are set by each brand rather than a standard test, so compare features, layers and weight too. Some bags, like the Gardner Carp Duvet Plus and the Fortis x Snugpak Techlite, change between ratings by adding or removing a layer.

Is a bedchair cover worth it?
Yes, especially in winter. A thermal cover adds insulation, blocks draughts and keeps dew, frost and rain off your sleeping bag. It also lets a lighter bag cover more of the year.

What is the warmest carp sleeping bag?
Of the bags we stock, the 5-season options are the Gardner Carp Duvet Plus with its inner thermal sheet, and the Fortis x Snugpak Techlite with its top layer on. The Techlite is the lighter of the two, at 3kg as a 5-season bag.

How do I stay warm in my sleeping bag on the bank?
Insulate underneath you with a good bedchair mattress, change into dry base layers and socks, wear a hat, and put a hot water bottle in the foot of the bag. A thermal bedchair cover adds a lot of warmth too.

Are heated blankets safe in a bivvy?
Electric heated blankets run from a power pack and do not burn fuel, so they do not produce carbon monoxide the way gas heaters do. Follow the maker's instructions and use a compatible power pack. Never use a gas heater or stove in a closed bivvy.

What are crash zips on a sleeping bag?
Crash zips are heavy-duty zips down one or both sides of a carp sleeping bag, so you can get out fast when a bite alarm goes. The better bags put a fleece baffle behind the zip to stop cold air getting through, like the oversized baffle on the Fox Voyager.

What is the difference between a sleeping bag and a sleep system?
A sleep system is a bedchair sold with its own matched bag or duvet that fixes to the bed, so the two set up and pack away together. A separate sleeping bag goes on any bedchair, so you can change it for the season or keep a bed you already own.

Can I use a summer sleeping bag in winter?
Only on mild nights, and only with a thermal bedchair cover over it. For frosty nights, a 4 or 5-season bag is the safer and more comfortable choice.
