Pike Fishing Tips UK: Techniques and Where to Catch Big Pike

By Hooked Tackle · Last updated 13 October 2026
We are a tackle shop in Newmarket, and we sell Lark Angling tickets over the counter. This is the advice we give pike anglers before they head out.

Quick Answer

Find the prey fish and you find the pike: features, depth changes and sheltered water once it turns cold. Fish a static deadbait for your best chance of a run, and a lure or a wobbled deadbait to search water. Near Newmarket, the River Lark is about 15 minutes away, the Fenland rivers and channels around Denver are under an hour, and Grafham Water is the place to try for a really big fish. Big pike come from big waters, big baits and the back end of the season — and every one goes back.

What Are the Best Pike Fishing Techniques?

Quick answer: a static deadbait for the most bites, lures and wobbled deadbaits for covering water.

Technique How it works Best when
Static deadbait A sea or coarse deadbait on a wire trace, legered or under a float, waiting for a pike to find it Cold water, coloured water, and any time you want to sit it out
Wobbled deadbait A deadbait cast out and retrieved slowly and erratically, so it twitches and flutters like a dying fish Searching drains, reedy margins and long, featureless banks
Lure fishing Soft shads, jerkbaits and spinners cast and retrieved, moving every few casts Clearer water and roving sessions where you want to cover miles
Boat fishing Deadbaits at anchor or lures cast from a boat on big open waters Reservoirs and broads where the fish are out of reach from the bank

Static deadbaiting is the method that catches most pike for most anglers. It works in cold water when pike will not chase, it lets a fish find the bait by scent, and it is the easiest way to start. The key is a drop-off indicator on every rod and an early strike. Our guide to the best deadbaits for pike covers which bait to use, the rigs and the trace sizes in full.

Wobbling a deadbait sits halfway between deadbaiting and lure fishing. Mount a small deadbait on a wire trace, cast it along the margin and retrieve it slowly with pauses and twitches, letting it flutter down between pulls. It is a brilliant way to explore a stretch of drain, and King's Lynn Angling Association suggests exactly that for the reedy margins on the Great Ouse at Ten Mile Bank.

Lure fishing keeps you moving and finds active fish fast. Slow the retrieve right down as the water cools and keep the lure close to the bottom. Our pike lures guide covers which lures to buy first and which to leave on the shelf.

Boat fishing opens up waters you cannot fish properly from the bank. Grafham Water, for example, is boat-only for predators. If you are new to it, go with someone who knows the water and wear a life jacket.

Where Do You Find Pike on Any Water?

Quick answer: wherever the prey fish are — find the roach and bream shoals and the pike will not be far away.

  • Features. Reed beds, lily pads, sunken trees, bridges, moored boats and overhanging bushes all give a pike somewhere to wait in ambush.
  • Depth changes. Drop-offs, the edge of a shelf and the deeper channel in a drain are classic holding spots.
  • Sheltered water in winter. Marinas, boatyards, deep bends and slack corners collect prey fish when it turns cold, and the pike follow them.
  • Slacks in a flood. When a river is up and pushing through, look for the quieter water off the main flow.
  • Signs of prey fish. Fish topping at dawn, grebes and cormorants working an area, and match anglers catching well are all clues.

Pike often take soon after a bait lands in the right spot. If nothing happens after 30 to 45 minutes, move — a roving approach with two rods and a light bag catches far more than sitting in the wrong swim all day.

When Is the Best Time to Go Pike Fishing in the UK?

Quick answer: October to March, once the water is below 18°C, in short feeding windows that move later in the day as it gets colder.

Pike fishing in the UK is a cold-water sport. The Pike Anglers' Club recommends not fishing for pike when the water is 18°C or above, because pike recover badly from a fight in warm, oxygen-poor water. That is why most pike anglers start in October and many clubs and fisheries open their pike season around then.

  • Autumn: pike feed hard as the water cools and the prey fish start to shoal up. Early mornings are often best.
  • Deep winter: feeding windows are short. The middle of the day often fishes better than dawn once the frosts arrive.
  • Mild spells: a few days of steady, mild weather after a cold snap often switch pike back on.
  • Late winter: February and early March are when the females are at their heaviest. River fishing for coarse fish closes on 15 March.

Our guide to pike fishing for beginners has more on fishing through the winter, and the winter clothing guide will keep you on the bank long enough to hit those windows.

The River Lark is the closest pike fishing to the shop. Lark Angling & Preservation Society controls around 8 miles of coarse water around Mildenhall and Barton Mills, and its membership is £30 for adults and £15 for concessions and juniors aged 12 to 18. Its rules allow sea baits and lures only for pike, ban livebait, limit you to two lines and require a landing net. As a river, it follows the 15 March to 15 June close season. You can buy your ticket from us at 88 All Saints Road.

The Fenland waters around Denver are where you go for bigger, wilder pike fishing. King's Lynn Angling Association runs the Great Ouse at Ten Mile Bank, the Relief Channel, the Cut-Off Channel, the Middle Level and the Old Bedford. Day tickets for its river waters are £6 from bailiffs on the bank, some waters are season ticket only, and any boat fishing needs a full KLAA book. KLAA flags several of these fisheries as affected by power lines, so look up before you set up.

Grafham Water is a trout reservoir that Anglian Water bills as one of the UK's best predator waters. Predator fishing is from boats only: lure and fly from 1 September 2026 and sea deadbaits from 1 October 2026, both running to 31 January 2027. A daily predator permit is £34, and an online-booked boat is £32, or £20 for one angler. Hooks must be barbless or have a single barbed point, wire traces are compulsory, livebait is banned and unhooking mats are compulsory. Read the full Grafham predator rules before you book.

The Norfolk Broads are a bigger trip but part of pike fishing history, and the Thurne system in particular has a long reputation for big fish. In winter the Broads Authority asks boats to keep out of the buoyed wildfowl refuges on Hickling Broad and Heigham Sound, and from 1 November to 1 March boats on Horsey Mere must stay in two marked channels.

How Do You Catch a Big Pike?

Quick answer: fish waters that hold big pike, use bigger baits, put in the time in late winter, and be ready to handle a big fish properly.

Choose the water first. Big pike come from waters with plenty of big food: large stillwaters, trout reservoirs, the broads and the bigger Fenland rivers and drains. The current British record, 47lb 5oz, came from Chew Valley Lake, a trout reservoir, in February 2024. You will not catch a fish like that from a water that has never produced one.

Use a bigger bait. A whole mackerel, a big smelt or a large lure picks out the bigger fish and is less likely to be grabbed by every jack in the swim. Match the trace and trebles to the bait — our deadbait guide has a trace size for each one.

Fish the back end. The biggest pike are females, and they are heaviest in February and March. On stillwaters that stay open, this is the time big fish are most often caught. On rivers, the season ends on 15 March.

Be patient and fish the same area. Big pike are fewer and further between. Once you have found a spot that produces, keep going back rather than chasing every rumour.

Be ready for the fish of a lifetime. The Pike Anglers' Club recommends a landing net with arms of at least 36 inches, or a round frame of at least 30 inches, plus a large padded unhooking mat. Add long forceps, side cutters and a weigh sling, and have the camera ready before the fish comes out of the water. Never put a pike in a keepnet.

Pike Fishing Rules in the UK

Quick answer: a rod licence, the river close season, no unattended rods, and the Pike Anglers' Club safety rules on traces and water temperature.

  • Rod licence: anyone aged 13 or over needs an Environment Agency rod licence, available from gov.uk. Junior licences for 13 to 16 year olds are free.
  • Close season: no coarse fishing on rivers from 15 March to 15 June. Most stillwaters and canals stay open, but many clubs set their own pike season.
  • Livebait: a fish you catch can only be used as bait on the water you caught it from, and many clubs ban livebait altogether, including Lark Angling and Grafham Water.
  • Unattended rods: it is illegal to leave a rod unattended, and pike rods need watching more than most.
  • Traces and temperature: the Pike Anglers' Club recommends a wire trace of at least 45cm and 20lb, a drop-off indicator on every bait rod, and no pike fishing at 18°C or above.

What Most Pike Anglers Get Wrong

Quick answer: staying in the wrong swim and striking too late.

  1. Sitting it out in an empty swim. If you have had nothing in 45 minutes, move. Pike are rarely spread evenly through a water.
  2. Striking too late on deadbaits. Waiting for a second run lets a pike swallow the bait. Strike at the first proper indication.
  3. Retrieving lures too fast in winter. Cold pike will not chase. Slow down and keep the lure near the bottom.
  4. Turning up without the unhooking kit. Long forceps, cutters, a mat and a big net come before any bait or lure.
  5. Ignoring the rules of the water. Bait bans, boat rules and season dates differ from club to club. Read them before you fish.

FAQs

Where can I go pike fishing near Newmarket?
The River Lark at Mildenhall and Barton Mills is the closest, about 15 minutes away, and Lark Angling tickets are sold in our shop. The King's Lynn Angling Association waters around Denver, including the Relief Channel and the Great Ouse at Ten Mile Bank, are under an hour away. Grafham Water offers boat-only predator fishing from 1 September to 31 January.

What is the best bait for pike fishing?
Smelt is the best all-round deadbait for pike, with mackerel close behind when the water is coloured. Both catch from the bank all winter on a simple leger or float leger. Our deadbait guide compares smelt, mackerel, lamprey and roach in detail.

What are the best pike fishing techniques?
Static deadbaiting catches the most pike, especially in cold water. Lure fishing and wobbled deadbaits are the best ways to search a water and find active fish. Many anglers fish a static deadbait and keep a lure rod to hand to cover the water around them.

When is the best time of year to catch pike in the UK?
October to March, once the water has dropped below 18°C. Autumn is often the most prolific, while February and March give the best chance of a really big female. River fishing closes on 15 March, so late-season big-fish trips are mostly on stillwaters.

How do you catch a big pike?
Fish a water known to produce big pike, use a bigger bait, and put the time in during late winter. Big pike are fewer and further between, so stick with an area that has produced rather than moving every week. Have a big net, a large mat and long forceps ready before you need them.

What is the British record pike?
The current British record pike weighed 47lb 5oz and was caught from Chew Valley Lake in Somerset in February 2024. It came from a trout reservoir, which is typical of where the biggest UK pike are caught.

Do I need a permit to fish for pike?
You need an Environment Agency rod licence if you are 13 or over, plus permission from whoever controls the water. That usually means a club membership, a day ticket or a fishery permit. Free stretches exist, but they are the exception rather than the rule.
